Guiana, on the trail of clandestine gold diggers
About
Guiana, June 2019, François-Michel le Tourneau, geographer and director of research at the CNRS, launches the Camopi-Regina expedition, composed of a botanist, an Amerindian guide and eight legionnaires from the 3rd Foreign Infantry Regiment (REI) of Kourou.
The objective: to investigate clandestine gold panning activities, by collecting the testimonies of workers from neighbouring Brazil, the Garimpeiros, at the heart of the French largest natural park.
The scientist thus continues his study of the populations living in the Amazonian forest. For a month, in total autonomy and by rowing, the expedition is immersed in one of the most hostile environments, the Amazonian rainforest.
